Revamp Your Outdoor Space: Transforming a Long Fence into a Picturesque Oasis
There's nothing quite like transforming an outdoor space - and if you have a long length of wooden fence to work with, there are so many ways to make it an attractive feature of your home. With the right planter boxes and shrubbery and plants, you can create something truly unique that will be a pleasure to look at and enjoy. That's exactly what we did in our own yard!
We were tired of gazing at a bare, dull wooden fence in our outdoor space. And it definitely needed a little somethin' somethin'. We wanted a captivating and inviting atmosphere around our pool. So let's get started with our process!
In this blog post, we've got the perfect solution to transform your lackluster fence into a stunning focal point. By incorporating planter boxes filled with vibrant shrubbery and annuals, along with solar uplighting for nighttime enchantment, you can create an outdoor oasis that will leave your guests in awe. Let's dive into the details!
Step 1: Assess the Space: Begin by evaluating the length of the fence and the green space beside your pool. This, of course, works really well even if you don't have a pool. Envision how the addition of planter boxes and greenery will enhance the overall aesthetics of your outdoor area. Take note of the fence's dimensions and ensure that the planter boxes are proportionate and properly spaced.
Step 2: Select the Planter Boxes: Choose the appropriate number of boxes -- in our case we decided on four ready-made durable and visually appealing planter boxes from Lowe's. We added some legs to each one for height and placed them on concrete pavers to make them level. Make sure they complement the design of your outdoor space. Consider materials like weather-resistant wood or sturdy plastic. Position the planter boxes at equal intervals along the fence, creating a balanced and harmonious arrangement. You can even decorate your boxes for parties like we did here for Memorial Day and July 4th!
Step 3: Choose Shrubs and Annuals: Select a variety of shrubs and annual plants that thrive in your climate and provide bursts of color throughout the year. Evergreen shrubs such as boxwood or holly can add a touch of elegance, while flowering annuals like petunias or marigolds can infuse your space with vibrant hues. Aim for a mix of textures, heights, and colors to create an eye-catching display. We used yellow ligustrum which will stay all year long and added colorful annuals. The trailing hot pink vinca will look beautiful as it grows and spills over the side of the planter boxes.
Step 4: Arrange the Plants: Carefully plant the shrubs and annuals in the planter boxes, considering their growth patterns and sunlight requirements. Place taller plants towards the back of the planter boxes and shorter ones towards the front, ensuring each plant has sufficient space to flourish. Utilize trellises or plant supports for climbing varieties, adding another dimension to your display. We lined each planter box with a black trash bag to protect the wood from moisture before we put in the potting mix.
Step 5: Solar Uplighting for Nighttime Magic: Extend the enchantment into the evening hours by incorporating solar uplighting. Opt for small, discreet solar-powered lights that can be easily attached to the fence or strategically placed near the planter boxes. These lights will accentuate the beauty of your shrubbery and create a magical glow in your outdoor space after sunset.
Step 6: Maintenance and Care: Regularly water and fertilize your plants according to their specific needs. Trim and prune the shrubs as necessary to maintain their shape and promote healthy growth. Ensure the solar lights receive adequate sunlight during the day to maximize their performance at night.
Step 7: Enjoy Your Oasis: Sit back, relax, and revel in the beauty of your transformed outdoor space. Invite friends and family to admire your picturesque oasis and relish the delightful ambiance it provides. Whether it's a serene evening by the pool or a lively gathering, your decorated fence will become the talk of the town!
By incorporating planter boxes with lush shrubbery, vibrant annuals, and solar uplighting, you can turn your once uninspiring wooden fence into a captivating outdoor masterpiece. Embrace the beauty of nature and savor the enchantment of your newly created oasis. Follow these steps, and soon your outdoor space will become a haven of beauty and relaxation. Happy decorating!
